Ulysses S. Grant Ulysses S. Grant was the General Chief of the Union Army. He fought in the battles of Shiloh, Vicksburg, Wilderness, Petersburg, Appomattox, and Captured Fort Donlson, and Fort Henry. He won all of the battles he fought. He was promoted to lieutenant General in February of 1864. Only two other people have ever held that rank before in the Union. They were George Washington and Winfield Scott. Then on March 6, 1864 he became the General Chief.

Gettysburg was the turning point of the war. General Lee led the battle for the Confederates, and General Meade led the battle for the Union. In the Battle of Gettysburg the Union outnumbered the Confederates by 10,000. The battle began on July 1, 1863. General Hill of the Union and General Fulton of the Cofederates started of the battle just outside of Gettysburg. On the second day of the battle General Meade and General Lee were the two main Generals in the battle. The Confederates fought an offensive battle on day two. Then on day three General Lee had General Picketts division charge at the Union because they lost their offensive position. It was then called Picketts Charge. Picketts Charge was a disaster for the Confederates. All of Picketts division except for a few men died. The ones that lived were injured. After the charge General Lee wanted the Pickett to round up his men and set up a defensive line, but General Pickett replied "Sir, I have no division!" That was the end of The Battle of Gettysburg.

Gettysburg
Robert E. Lee Robert E. Lee's greatest battles were those of Gettysburg, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Fredericksburg. General Lee was the best General in the entire war. He was a master at strategy. Despite his expertise the Confederates still lost the war. Lee was promoted to commander in chief of all the Confederate army. His reign as Commander in Chief didn't last very long though. Two months after he became Commander in Chief he surrendered the war.
